Sanktuarium zostało wzniesione z inicjatywy dyrektora Radia Maryja: ojca doktora Tadeusza Rydzyka.

Świątynia powstała jako wotum wdzięczności za pontyfikat papieża Jana Pawła II. Projektantem obiektu jest architekt Andrzej Ryczek.

Budowany od czerwca 2012 r. kościół pw. Maryi Gwiazdy Nowej Ewangelizacji i św. Jana Pawła II konsekrowany został 18 maja 2016 r., w rocznicę urodzin papieża Jana Pawła II.
