Miasto w północno-wschodniej części Polski w woj. Podlaskim. W latach 1975-1989 miasto należało do woj. Suwalskiego. Miasto jest położone w zachodniej części Równiny Augustowskiej, wchodzącej w skład Pojezierza Litewskiego, nad rzeką Nettą, pomiędzy 7 jeziorami Necko, Białym, Rospuda Augustowska, Sajenek, Sajenko, Studzieniczne i Sajno. Obok miasta przepływa najkrótsza rzeka Polski - Klonownica.
