Description
The Tapire (Tapirus) are the only single genus within the German mammalian family (Tapiridae) from the order of the Perissodactyla (Perissodactyla). It was once very diverse and still comprises five living species. They are heavy animals with a characteristic trunk, which mainly live in closed tropical forests and feed on soft plant food. They represent a fairly ancient genus and have been known since the middle Miocene 14 million years ago. Today the tapirs with the flatland and mountain peaks as well as Tapirus kabomani in South America, with the Central American Tapir in Central America and the Malabar Tapir in Southeast Asia are spread.
